This is one cause where the actions of a single person mean everything. One volunteer trained and empowered to ensure that every child can thrive in the safe embrace of a loving home and for a life of independence. The volunteer, once appointed by the Judge, will fight to ensure the child’s basic rights and essential needs don’t get overlooked or ignored by the system. It has been such a rewarding experience to get to know these children. They deserve so much more than life has given them to this point. They are looking for that one person that really cares about them, listens to them, and makes sure that they are in a safe place. The look on that child’s face when they finally come to realize and accept that someone is sincerely committed to helping, no matter how long it might take, is priceless. The opportunity to give every child a voice and a safe, permanent home makes the CASA mission a personal goal for each volunteer.
I signed up to become a volunteer with Jackson County CASA through working with another worthy volunteer group and have gained immeasurable knowledge of other cultures and family dynamics through the training sessions and working with families of children in the Youth Court system. I would love to say that I’ve been a tremendous help to the children that have been assigned to me; but, that would only speak half truths. The experiences have been life changing as much for me as for the families that I’ve worked with and I would not trade the experiences for all the money in the world. CASA means the a lot to me. I signed up years ago when a coworker of mine started to foster children. I wanted to help the children in my community, but did not feel I was capable of fostering without becoming overly attached. She convinced me to take the CASA training and work as a volunteer. I love helping children and being the eyes and ears for the child to help determine best placement, better outcomes, and permanent loving homes for all the children of CASA. Once assigned a child you stay with the child until the case is closed so the CASA volunteer is sometimes the most familiar person in the system to the child.
Knowing the complete facts of the family, the volunteer, though down at times, keeps me plugging away because on the flipside of this file, stands a child, a child that knows without a doubt, this volunteer is there for her. In a family that has deserted her for the time being, stands a CASA volunteer that cares.
